Tips on cutting down your alcohol intake
Here are some practical tips if you want to cut down the amount of alcohol you’re drinking before or after your alcohol-free month.
Your Sober October challenge is a great opportunity to reduce the amount of alcohol you consume while also raising vital funds for people with breast cancer - it's a win-win! To help you prepare, we've put together some tips to help cut down your alcohol intake before or after your alcohol-free month.
Quench your thirst with water or another non-alcoholic drink before drinking alcohol.
Space out your drinks about an hour apart - this will help you drink less.
Drink some water alongside or after each alcoholic drink.
Avoid salty snacks such as potato chips or nuts while drinking alcohol, as salt makes you thirsty and more likely to drink quickly.
Try a shandy (beer with lemon-lime soda or ginger ale) or a wine spritzer (wine with club soda).
Buy an alcohol measure to keep track of exactly how much you’re drinking, or buy small (125mL) glasses rather than large ones.
Find other ways to cope with stress that don't involve alcohol. Go for a walk or have a bath with some relaxing music.
Keep track of your drinking patterns. To see exactly how much and how often you drink, write down what you drink in a diary.
Set reasonable goals. For example, schedule at least two alcohol-free days each week or don't drink alone when stressed.
Do something other than drink when you want to unwind. Play a game or catch up with friends.
You can make a difference to the lives of many
